Many consumers would have different reactions regarding jailbreaking their Apple products. In fact, there are even some who are still unfamiliar with the process. There are some who would want to do it, but don’t know how. Jailbreaking an iPod Touch is very similar to doing it on other devices such as the iPhone and the iPad. It somehow is just easy to do, but it has some pros and cons for those who want to try it.
Jailbreaking simply means eliminating the restrictions imposed by Apple on its devices which run the iOS operating system. This means that owners of Apple products can easily download and extract applications without the use of Apple’s App Store. What’s even better is that these applications can be downloaded for free. iPod Touch owners would notice that upon jailbreak applications which cost a few US dollars in the App Store would not even cost a single penny anymore.
Jailbreaking, however, is not always the same for every device. It actually depends on different factors, such as what type of device one wishes to perform the jailbreak on, what generation the device is, and what iOS version the device has. On the brighter side of things, it just involves several programs, all of which are just similar when it comes to usage. These programs are RedSn0w, JailbreakMe, Absinthe, and Seas0npass.
It should also be noted that there are two types of jailbreaks, the tethered one and the untethered one. An untethered jailbreak means that if the device has shut down or has been switched off, it will completely start up without any problems. This simply indicates that the device will start up in a jailbroken state after every reboot. On the other hand, a tethered jailbreak is the exact opposite of the untethered one. An untethered jailbroken device has to be re-jailbroken everytime it is shut down. This means that before the device can be turned on, it should be plugged-in to the computer first and the user should do the jailbreaking process again. There are even some instances that the device won’t open unless the jailbreak method has been re-applied. Device owners should keep in mind two things – (1) that the jailbreak should always be done everytime the device is turned off; and (2) that not all devices have tethered and untethered jailbreaks. Usually, devices with the new iOS versions installed and newly released Apple devices only have the untethered jailbreak procedure.
The step-by-step procedure is pretty easy. Of course, one should have the device, his computer, and his connector ready. First, the iOS version of the device should be checked. The jailbreak program (JailbreakMe, RedSn0w, Absinthe, or Seas0npass) applicable to the iOS version should then be downloaded. For example, if the iPod Touch has the iOS 5.1 version installed, the user should download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 for Mac or for Windows. Apple device owners could check through the internet regarding which jailbreak program version they should download for their devices. The program should then be launched on the computer to begin jailbreak. The iPod should then be turned off and connected to the computer. It should be placed in DFU mode, which can be done by following the instructions on the screen. After this, just follow the step-by-step instructions, but when the checkbox options appear, select the ‘Install Cydia’ button. The device will then begin rebooting and afterwards, jailbreaking will be completed. Click the ‘Finish’ button and the procedure will be complete. If it does not reboot afterwards, just reboot manually using the program and on the checkbox, select the ‘Just boot tethered now’ box. After installing Cydia, use the app to get the application known as Installous. It’s actually the new App Store, the app where users can download the cracked apps for free.
Most people would want to jailbreak their Apple devices because they can download apps freely without spending too much money. However, a jailbroken iPod loses its warranty. Once the iPod is jailbroken, Apple has no liability whatsoever in case the device does not work anymore. Nevertheless, the device can still use the App Store. However, applications that have been downloaded on Installous cannot be updated via the App Store. Also, a jailbroken iPod cannot be updated to a newer iOS version. Once the iPod is updated to a newer version of the operating system, the device loses all the apps downloaded in Installous. This means that the jailbreaking process should be done again, but this time the user should download a jailbreak program that is compatible with the newer iOS version. These are the pros and cons of iPod jailbreaking.
While there are many benefits and downfalls to jailbreaking an Apple device, it all depends on the owner of the device on whether he is going to jailbreak the device or not. It should be noted, however, that there are risks involved in doing such a process, and it is not a recommended procedure as it a practice not recognized by Apple. It all boils down to choice, to jailbreak or not to jailbreak, and face the consequences of selected option.
